Confidence matters during a job interview, and your ability to appear confident about promoting yourself can help you land the job you want.

There are things you can do to prepare yourself that help boost your confidence.

Get Your Resume Ready

It’s likely you submitted a resume or gave information on your job application. Even so, reviewing your resume and bringing it up to date is a good idea. It helps remind you of your experience, skills and training. You can bring copies of it with you to the interview so that if more than one person interviews you, you can give them a copy.

Research the Job

Finding out about the company you’ll be working for and knowing the details about job qualifications make you look prepared. You can check Linkedin for information or check the website online. You can read about the industry, the company owner and know as much about the project as you can find. If you find key information, make a few notes so you can review it before the interview.

Prepare for Job Interview Questions

Knowing what kinds of questions interviewers ask and having ideas about how to respond can help build your confidence during the interview. Here are a few of many commonly asked questions listed by Inc.com:

  • What are your biggest weaknesses?
  • What are you biggest strengths?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?
  • Out of all the other candidates, why should you get the job?
  • Why do you want this job?

Figure out appropriate answers for responding to the questions.

Look Presentable

Wear clothes that are appropriate for the interview. Make sure your clothes are clean and pressed. Ensure you’ve showered and shaved, brushed your teeth, are wearing deodorant, etc. If you smoke, avoid smoking before the interview and keep the cologne or perfumed products to a minimum.

Arrive on Time

Figure out directions and drive time in advance and leave yourself an extra 15–30 minutes cushion to arrive on time.
